What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic (whole body) approach to healthcare naturally the osteopath. Will treat a specific problem but in addition will look for restrictions in other parts of the body where compensations may have occurred

These compensations may lead to problems such as information stiffness and pain. That is why osteopaths try where possible to look at the whole-body not just the area where the injury has occurred. A broad range of techniques can be used such as manipulation and exercises and these together can complement the advice given by your GP and any medication he prescribed.

Training to become an osteopath is a four-year full-time course once qualified osteopaths are required by law to register with the General osteopathic council. This council maintains the highest standards  and conduct amongst its members and regulates the profession . Each year every osteopath is required to attend 30 hours of lectures in order to re -register and maintain a good knowledge base.

What are the benefits of using an osteopath?

There are many benefits of using osteopathy for the treatment of your injury. First of all it sets itself apart from other therapies that help to repair muscles, ligaments , peripheral joints and the spine as it does not require surgery or medication. The treatment should be largely painless and usually there should be no side-effects following the treatment. If the patient is likely to experience a small reaction to treatment this is normally explained at the time of treatment and this is usually only temporary.

Osteopathy treats all age groups however the treatment may vary according to your age and the condition you present with.

The main benefit of course is that it can make you more mobile and give your muscles and spine more stability and strength helping you to move more freely.

What does an osteopath do to you?

Osteopaths are very similar to chiropractors in the way we  manipulate the body however we may not only treat the area that’s painful but also look for reasons and areas of restriction in the spine that may have contributed to your problem. Techniques we use are manipulation , massage, exercises, electrotherapy and advise on ergonomic set ups at work.

Treatments sometimes involve 2 to 3 sessions to get symptomatic relief however some injuries such as arthritis in the hip may benefit from a regular treatment plan however this will be discussed with you when you attend the clinic.
